Extension 4: Catania
Friday, Sep. 17, 2010

The new frontiers in technological innovations, the effects of globalization, and the related financial world crises, call for systematic analysis of the role of entrepreneurship in the novel evolving scenarios. While strategy scholars are involved in various research streams scrutinizing a phenomenon that is essential to the foundation of economic development, entrepreneurs are striving to find new and innovative ways to rejuvenate firms' competitive advantages whilst institutions and public actors are attempting to promote local development through multiple ventures formation.

The SMS Extension in Catania presents a panel of six outstanding global scholars that will shed light on new challenges and emerging issues in the field of entrepreneurship.

By attending Catania's SMS Extension, researcher and practitioners will learn how to crisscross traditional approaches in entrepreneurship with new perspectives that can be valuable in both erecting stronger pillars in the strategic entrepreneurship domain and effectively mingle with the current challenging environment.

Session 2: Discovering and exploiting business opportunities: New perspectives in entrepreneurship research
Nowadays, changes in the competitive and institutional scenario create discontinuities that challenge entrepreneurs' efforts in managing the prosperity of their firms as well as business models and innovation methods. The wealth creation process is manifold and it results from entrepreneurial strategies that create an appropriate and effective coordination of actions taken to exploit existing and explore future opportunities.
This session will discuss emerging issues on entrepreneurship research focusing on what is not explained and predicted by theoretical perspectives and conceptual frameworks already proposed in the literature. Moreover, it will give a set of possible themes that may progress and develop the focus of research for the decade forehead.

The emergence of new scenarios and entrepreneurs' efforts to rejuvenate their business models question traditional approaches of entrepreneurship research that often underestimate the effects of contextual factors on entrepreneurial activities. Recognizing the diversity of organizational, political, and cultural contexts of entrepreneurship can help understand the richness of the entrepreneurship phenomenon.
This session will explore how entrepreneurship research can incorporate the context, in terms of organizational (routines and capabilities), geographical (international vs. ethnic), and institutional (emerging countries) issues. Challenges for entrepreneurship theory as well as implications for research designs will be discussed and debated.
