Research on organizational knowledge and capabilities has been at the core of the development of strategy field over the last two decades. Despite the wealth of novel insights produced, however, the common view is that we are still far from a generally accepted and empirically validated theory of how capabilities develop in firms, and of the conditions at which they create and sustain competitive advantage. Even more problematic is the fact that the this (now) dominant perspective in the strategy discourse does not adequately consider the interdependencies between organizational competence and micro-level (such as individual cognition, motivation, values, identity), meso- or firm-level (strategy processes, governance structures, cultural traits) and macro-level (relational, technological, political, environmental and societal) dynamics. In this first extension of the 2010 SMS annual conference, we intend to offer an opportunity to identify, prioritize and begin to tackle some of these gaps from several theoretical perspectives and levels of analysis. The aspiration is to help the field chart the road ahead for future research on these fundamental questions for our field.
