In a growingly global and hypercompetitive context, firms' boundaries, traditional sources of competitive advantage and consolidated forms of corporate governance may not be appropriate any longer.
The main sources of competitive advantage become more and more difficult to seize, to analyze and to pursue. Even within some consolidated research streams, such as resource-based theory, the unit of analysis is the firm itself and the reference to resources not only owned or controlled but also available to the firm as a consequence of its relations with other stakeholders. This conceptual evolution inevitably evokes the process of firm’s configurations, in sets of complicated and intense relationships. This complexity, moreover, is the real strategic challenge for firms’ competitiveness.
The proposed session will feature outstanding keynote speakers like Jay B. Barney (Ohio State University), Joseph Lampel (City University of London) and Sankaran Venkataraman (University of Virginia), aiming at comparing different views of eminent scholars from Europe and US, with diverse perspectives, in order to check whether there are common paths to explore in research that can be outlined and what can really be a theoretical contribution for real firms on these emerging strategic issues. In Naples Extension, the main themes of interest are:
- The evolution of the concept of intangible assets;
- Can corporate governance (or network governance in aggregate entities) be source of competitive advantage itself?
- What are the most relevant factors in governance’s concept and application’s changes?
- In firms’ destructuring and contextual inserting into networks with a high set of relations (reconstructuring) have governance choices become more difficult? Why?
- What are their implications in terms of risks?
- Are inter-firm collaborations always positive or negative processes can be verified. If so, in which direction?
- What are the implications of a systemic view with reference both to the supply-client relationships and to the whole of stakeholders?
- Can relations be source of competitive advantage?
- Can the relationship between public and private organizations influence firm’s performance?
- Evolution and criticalities of relation-based systems.

About Naples:
Naples Convention & Visitors Bureau
Naples Tourist Information: There are tourist offices in the main train station, Piazza Gesu Nuovo, and Piazza Martiri.
Transportation: How to Reach Naples
Naples International Airport called Aeroporto Capodichino, is located 5 miles north of Naples. Buses with stops at Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Muncipio are frequent. Taxis are available outside the arrivals hall. See the link above for more detailed information.
Naples Train Station - Napoli Centrale:
Naples Train Station is located in the Piazza Garibaldi, just east of the city center. It's really two stations in one: the upper section for the state run trains and the lower lever for the private Circumvesuviana line that will take you to Pompeii, Herculaneum (Ercolano), and Sorrento. You can also rent a car at Napoli Centrale, as well as get tourist information for the region.
Local Buses in Naples:
Local buses are a great way to get around the city. All busses stop at the Piazza Garibaldi at some point along their route. Get ANM bus information at the west end of the piazza. Bus tickets can be bought at a "tabacchi" or tobacco shop or at some newsstands. Buses tend to be crowded in Naples, sometimes it's best to see the city on foot.
Trains from Rome to Naples:
To get from Roma Termini, Rome's main train station, to Napoli Centrale, Naples' main train station, there are several train options. Trains run directly between the two stations so most trains don't require a change at another stop. Trains run from early morning until late at. Here are options, starting from the least expensive:
- Rapido (R) and Regionale - the slowest and least expensive trains take nearly three hours. Rapido trains usually have only second class with no seat reservations.
- IC and ICplus - Intercity and Intercity Plus trains take just over two hours. They have first and second class compartments and seat resrvations can be made (mandatory on ICplus). Cost is almost double the cheapest rapido fare but since trains can be crowded, having a seat reservation is a good idea.
- ESA or ESfast - Eurostar trains take less than two hours, have first and second class compartments, and seat reservations are mandatory. These are about triple the lowest rapido fares but much faster. Note: there are some Eurostar trains that go to other stations in Naples (not Centrale).
